Adeline Satya, a kindergartener at Valley Inquiry Charter School, was pronounced the                                 grand winner of the 15th Annual Oregon Gardens Earth Day Fair poster contest.

The Earth Day event to be held on April 19 at the Oregon Gardens is                                   sponsored by Marion County Environmental Service, the Oregon Gardens, Izaac Walton League and others.

On April 2, the Marion County Board of Commissioners presented a certificate and a $100 gift card from Fred Meyers to Adeline for her win.

The poster contest was open to students in all K–12 programs and schools. Over 100 entries were submitted from students throughout the area.

The panel of judges who selected Adeline’s poster were so stuck by how well the poster was done, and found it pretty stunning considering her age. They felt her work best fit the spirit of this year’s theme, “protecting and preserving our planet.”

All the top entries will be on display in the Grand Hall at the Oregon Gardens on the day of the Earth Day Fair.

Earth Day Poster Contest

Salem, OR – The grand winner of the 15th Annual Oregon Garden Earth Day Fair poster contest has been selected by a local panel of judges. Adeline Satya, a kindergarten student at Valley Inquiry Charter School, was the winner for both her age category and for the grand prize—the first kindergarten student ever chosen for this honor. Adeline’s entry will be used for this year’s poster and other promotional ads for the upcoming Earth Day event that will take place on April 19, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., at the Oregon Garden in Silverton. Admission is free.

Apply for secondary transfers March 3-28, 2014

Salem-Keizer middle and high school students who wish to attend a school other than their assigned school next fall, 2014-15, must submit an in-district transfer request between March 3 and 28, 2013.

High school students may request transfer to access elective programs not offered at their assigned school. A catalog of electives that are eligible for transfer can be downloaded from the district's documents library:

Some restrictions and requirements apply to the Electives In-District Transfer. Please visit the Student Transfers page for complete information.

In-district transfer request forms can be picked up at any school office, and must be completed and returned to the student's assigned school during the application date window. There is no guarantee a transfer request will be approved.

School offices will be closed from March 24 through 28 (Spring Break). During this time, transfer requests can be returned to:

Two days added back to school calendar for students

Two days have been added back to the school calendar for 2013-14 for students, except for graduating seniors. The days were added by the interim superintendent to make up for days school was closed this month due to inclement weather.

Elementary School Students

June 11 and June 12, 2014, have been added to the school calendar for elementary students. These are now regular school days. June 12 is the final day for elementary students.

The updates are now added to amended calendars. You can find the updated calendars on the district website's Calendars webpage. If you have any questions about these changes, contact your school.
